Things to Do: Hiking & Fishing

Want to spend the day at a spot many say has the best fishing around? The breakwater in Camp Ellis provides an ideal location to catch stripers.  The town has great amenities for your fishing adventure including; restrooms, pole rentals & a bait shop (2 hours pole rentals available and a bait machine available 24/7).

The Eastern Trail Alliance is an organization that works for the expansion, upkeep and promotion of the Eastern Trail. The Eastern Trail is the southern Maine section of the East Coast Greenway, a large network of trails that will connect Calais, Maine with Key West, Florida.  Currently in Maine, it is a transportation/recreation greenway connecting Kittery and southernmost Maine to Casco Bay in South Portland.  The Eastern Trail has a growing span of off-road sections, as well as a scenic on-road trail that mostly follows quiet country roads.  Bike riders and hikers enjoy the beautiful journey from South Portland's Bug Light Park on Casco Bay (near Portland) to Kittery's Piscataqua River.  The Eastern Coast Greenway was started in the mid 1980's using the Eastern railroad corridor.     a 65 mile section of the East Coast Greenway. Enjoy 1.7 miles of trail for hiking, biking and guided nature programs. You will see tupelo (black gum) trees, which are rare at this latitude, while hiking in this 100-acre area. There is a sandy beach, picnic area and changing rooms are also available for your convenience. FEE

This quiet park, tucked away by the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge at the end of Tenney Lane, has an unmarked .4 mile path that takes you through a forest, over a boardwalk and small bridge, behind a housing development, and finally to a nice overlook of the marsh. You can also do a .4-mile loop around the playing fields on a flat path. Directions: The address is 42 Tenney Lane. From Pleasant Hill Road, turn into Tenney Lane and follow it to the park’s parking lot.

This property, owned by the Town of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, is located on Portland Avenue near Milliken Mill Pond and Mill Brook. The town acquired the Milliken Mill Woods in 1999 as a gift from Janice Milliken Andrews. There is a parking lot at 192 Portland Avenue. This side is called the Animal Shelter Area. It has a picnic area and several trails. Across the street is the Mill Brook Trail network.

Saco Bay Trails mission is to create and maintain this network of trails and to promote its acceptance and use by the public. We are an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to creating and maintaining recreational trails in the Saco Bay Area. We envision a permanent network of free, easily accessible, well maintained, well marked and well publicized trails, which people with a broad range of abilities can use and enjoy.

The Saco River begins in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and winds its way to the Maine coast before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean.  The river provides many opportunities for fishing, boating and other outdoor recreational activities. There are many beaches and boat launches located on the river so it is easily accessible to visitors.

Wilcox Pond is a youth-only fishing area limited to children ages 16 and below. The pond is stocked with Brook Trout by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. MDIFW Complete rules and regulations can be found here.
